Sunday, December 10, Candle-Lit "Concert" of Advent and Christmas Music

We will be playing a selection of classical Advent and Christmas carols & music from the likes of Bach, Handel, Arthur Sullivan, Byrd, Britten, etc., and performed by some of the finest choirs and orchestras.

Advent hymns such as “In the Bleak mid-winter” will be sung by the choir of Keble College, and there will be old carols from Germany that should be very familiar. We will hear some of the great Christmas choral pieces such Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, and some dances from “The Nutcracker” ballet, etc.

There will be a brief explanation of the pieces and why they have been chosen - but the emphasis will be on listening to the lovely music!

As usual, we will be setting up a really wonderful stereo system, much of it vintage equipment from the 1970s. People often say it feels like listening to live music, with wonderful clarity and a volume that fills the church.

The evenings are quite informal - so bring your knitting - or a good book, if that is how you like to listen to music. The church will be warm – but you might wish to bring a cushion!

There will be a box for anyone who wishes to make a donation to help us repair the gable coping-stones. We would be very grateful for anything given in this way as it will help us to keep this lovely church open for future generations.
